Famous Actors Doing Voice Overs…

December 3rd, 2009

So…. For years it always rubbed me the wrong way when I’d see famous actors getting these awesome Voice Over roles for big Disney or Pixar animated movies or series…or for major, national ad campaigns. I always thought that the famous actors should just stay in their own field and leave the “voice over” jobs to the Voice Over pros.

But recently it hit me. Since I’ve really started blogging and coaching so much more…I’ve been heavily emphasizing that this is Voice Over ACTING…Not just a disconnected voice, over some cartoon or visual imagery. It’s ACTING…and in the truest form!

So…That being said…I guess I really have no right to be upset or deny a fellow actor the right to practice his or her craft. We’re all in the same pool…just different areas. And if you really want to look at it as: “The glass is half full”, this is really a great wake up call to a lot of the seasoned voice actors to step it up…go back to get some more training/coaching…expand your offerings, etc.

Whatever the case… Don’t let this deter you from pursuing the dream and becoming the absolute best and most successful Voice Actor you can be! Bring on ALL contenders! Famous actors or not!  :)

Theater Actors Transitioning To Voice Acting

November 24th, 2009

Here’s an interesting quote from Andrea Romano…Voiceover casting director, Los Angeles; ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold,’ ‘Green Lantern: First Flight,’ ‘Teen Titans,’ ‘Justice League’

“I have discovered over the years that theater actors make the transition to voiceover acting for animation easier, smoother, and faster than feature-film actors. Many performances are barely more than a whisper in on-camera acting, but in animation it’s got to be bigger and broader.”

Voice Acting Gone Terribly Wrong!

October 29th, 2009

Funny? Yes!  But, I’ll bet if you ask 9 out of 10 producers who have been working more than a few years, they have had a voice over session almost as bad!  haha

Is The Animation Voice Acting Process Changing?

October 28th, 2009

There was an interview recently on moviefone.com with Spike Jonze, Director of the hit movie “Where The Wild Things Are”. He talked about the way the voice acting process went to record the voices for the monsters in the movie. (The question and his answer are right below this.)  It will be interesting to see if the industry starts moving toward this process, or stays with recording each voice seperately. We’ll keep our eyes on it!

The actors who voiced the monsters acted out the roles on stage together; that’s an unusual process for voice acting, isn’t it?

We worried about the traditional way — that it would become staid. I wanted them to be together, because when you have two actors going in a scene together, they affect the other one. It just sounds different, it feels different, there’s something more alive in it. That was the real goal, to get them in a room and let it come to life, from the spontaneity that can happen when you have great actors acting in the moment together.
